Château des Landes
Three generations of winegrowers in Lussac Saint- Emilion appellation
The Château des Landes is a family property located in Lussac Saint Emilion AOC. This winery was founded in 1952 by Paul Lassagne. Former factory worker decides to leave his life at the factory and to buy a small house and two hectares of AOC Lussac Saint- Emilion.
At that time away to think it was possible to live only for the wine he managed his property and combined cropping vines, fruit trees, vegetable and livestock. This polyculture managament will end in 1979 with the arrival of his son, Daniel Lassagne.
Between 1952 and 1994 the property was expanded little by little through acquisitions of land and allowing it to move from 2 to 24 hectares. In 1985, with its rich experience in Lussac Saint-Emilion the Lassagne family buys virgin lands AOC Bordeaux and plant vineyards, creating the Chateau des Arnauds.
Today the property is managed by the little son of the founder, Nicolas Lassagne.
Quich Focus on Nicolas Lassagne.
Young winemaker of 33 years, is passionate about his country he joined the family team in 2001. He want to be part of the family winemaking continuity of care combining local wines, fruit and well integrated woody aromas. He has a particular interest in the development and understanding of the vineyard in a plot logic farming. A sensitivity that was born during his training at agricultural college of the Montagne village. (Montagne Saint- Emilion) .
Where does the name of the Chateau des Landes and the Chateau des Arnauds come from?
Both of them come from the name of the plots. “Landes” mean “forest”.
What do you look for each year when you make the wines of Château des Landes?
“I’m looking to perpetuate the family style wines are round , silky wine on the palate, fruity but with tannins present fairly , fresh taste . Regarding the Cuvée ‘Grand Prestige’ is seeking combined with finesse and fruit power. But also have a good structure and a wooded wine.” (Nicolas Lassagne)
Side anecdote:
For one of the vintages of Château des Landes, the cuvée ” Grand Heritage ” (100% Merlot ) , Nicolas Lassagne opted for an unusual method in Bordeaux winemaking , full wine . This winemaking technique is to put the grapes in contact with the wood of the barrels at the beginning of the alcoholic fermentation. The “future wine” does not pass through the chest but is put directly after the harvest in oak barrels provided for this purpose. The term “integral” expresses the fact that the grapes are vinified and aged in a single container. In this case the wine spent a year in barrels of 600 liters and 3 or 4 months in new barrels to “refine”.
Still side anecdote but with a humor touch. If you move to the property you will be lucky to being welcomed by a dog with a famous name which is predestined to live in a vineyard, “Petrus.”
Thanks to Nicolas Lassagne for his hospitality .
