Azienda Agricola : Coppacchioli Ginevra : Love for the family and the passion of place

This small family estate is born from an ambition to value an exceptional terroir of a tiny village of 10 permanent habitants – Cupi di Visso. This land, where once animal farming had priority over viticulture, nowadays produces rare wines with an identity and character. Thanks to the determination of the family, this vineyard, characterised by extreme viticulture, but valuable terroir, gives still white and red wines in IGT Marche, as well as sparkling wines from Pinot Nero and local grape varieties of Central Italy. In each wine we can find a harmony of mountain influence, marine soils, and various herbs, covering the vineyard.

VertdeVin: Why did you make the choice to produce wine?

Ginevra Coppaccioli: The real meaning of my job is a deep love for my family, the treasure of memory, and the essential importance of family bonds. My father, Angelo, wanted to honor my brother, Lucio, his passion for wines, his brilliant intuition, his ambition, and his dream to become an entrepreneur planting a vineyard near the small village of Cupi di Visso, which we are bound to. When my brother passed away, I embraced his project, it became my passion. At the age of eighteen years old I strove to manage it – I was studying and learning from my mistakes, and I was fighting to be heard. I desired to value and enhance the particular terroir of the Marche Region, influenced by Sibillini Mountains.

What is the signature of your wines, which helps to recognise them in blind tastings?

G.C.: Our wines are characterised by a peculiar minerality and acidity, as well as by a large variety of herbal aromas. We practice mountain, heroic, viticulture at the altitude of 1000 m above sea level. Our vineyard is among the highest in the country and the highest in Central and Southern Italy. The microclimate is specific here, which makes our wines distinguishable and unique. We have lots of herbs growing in our vineyard, because Sibillini Mountains are Europe’s herbarium for their biodiversity.

Do you have any specific projects for the estate?

G.C.: Our intent is to encourage the rebirth of the peasant culture in areas now abandoned, cultivating the mountain land in an environmentally sustainable way with respect to its natural heritage. We work according to the rules of organic farming preserving the treasure that surrounds us. Our project is to be renowned as excellence in our country and to start organizing 360° experiences – with a possibility for our clients to accommodate in Cupi, or directly in the vineyard, to fully enjoy a natural experience in our mountains. Our goal is to value the bond with the tradition of the territory, combining innovative projects aimed at the growth of the local economy.

Could you speak about your terroir?

G.C.: Mount Tranquilla protects our vineyard from cold winds, creating a perfect microclimate for winemaking. The terroir of our 3ha vineyard is a small paradise among the mountains, surrounded by broom, thistles, fennel, wild mint, dog roses, and other scents whose influence can be seen in a glass of our wines. The soil is clay-loamy, but we often discover marine fossils, because the Sibillini Mountains were submerged by the sea in the past. This characteristic gives salinity to our wines, which sometimes have a marine touch, despite being 100% mountain products. The area has important temperature ranges, good southwest sun exposure, and no pollution, being totally isolated from any other human activity. Our wines are all organic and pure, ranging from Metodo Classico “Millesimato” sparkling wines to still wines. Our signature wine – Primodicupi – is a varietal of Vissanello, an ancient native vine of Cupi, obtained from an archaic variant of Pecorino. Pinot Noir is a young red wine with a ruby color, which perfectly expresses our terroir. Chardonnay Pas Dosè and Rosè Extra Brut sparkling wines, aged on lees of almost 60 months, have a fine and persistent bubble. There is also a limited edition of 100 bottles of Vissanello sparkling wine: the Pecora Fuorigregge. Our territory has always been suited to produce ”shepherd’s” wine, dictated by the times of transhumance and, therefore, harvested at the beginning of August. But this place had an enolic tradition – in the old land register found by the family, appear, at the end of the eighteenth century, lands called ”the vineyards”.

Where does the name of the winery come from?

G.C.: It is our family name. Coppacchioli is my father’s surname and mine, Tattini is my mother’s surname. The symbol chosen for the logo is taken from the base of the portal of the famous Sanctuary of Macereto, a few kilometers from Cupi, erected in the 16th century, and shows our names: Gaia, Lucio, Ginevra. The Coppacchioli family, coming from Abeto (Norcia), moved to Cupi at the end of the 1700’s following the transfer of a prelate relative to this place.
