vert-de-vin-bellview-winery-new-jersey-jim-quarella (36)Bellview Winery is a young winery in the Outer Coastal Plain and specifically in the town of Landisville (Atlantic County – New Jersey). It was created in 1914 as a farm (vegetables) by the great-grandfather of the current owner Jim Quarella. At the time the young Italian immigrant left with his wife and children overseas to pursue the American dream. In the United States it took root in the region and they worked the land. Four generations walked in his footsteps. It was not until the early 2000s, that Jim Quarella transformed this vegetable farm into a vineyard at 100%: Bellview Winery.vert-de-vin-bellview-winery-new-jersey-jim-quarella (34)

Where does the name “Bellview Winery“come from?

The name was given by the founder of the property, Mr. Angelo Quarella. It is simply the anglicized word “bella” attached to the word “view” to express the beautiful panorama enjoyed the property.

Musician Originally it professionally reorientation is arrived at Bellview Winery in the summer of 2005 As a Vineyard worker. Already interested in wine before arriving at the vineyard his interest in winemaking has grown by contact with Jim Quarella thus to become a passion, “I love winemaking” (David Gardner). He also learned all that is necessary for the production of wine.

vert-de-vin-bellview-winery-new-jersey-jim-quarella (22)He likes in this business is that “everything is constantly changing, everything changes every year. Every year we make wine but you never get the same result. We must try every year to improve our methods and the final wine.

What you like about this job?Definitely the red wines! For the vinification and aging gives me more pleasure than for whites. With red you can be more creative, you can play more on the different types of aging. In the end they give us more opportunity (more possible outcomes). But also because it is more complex to implement techniques. “(David Gardner)

What could recognize one about the wines of this vineyard in a blind tasting?

vert-de-vin-bellview-winery-new-jersey-jim-quarella (4)Of course it would be difficult to say that the 27 wines, however, all have common characteristics. But they are not fruit bombs, at first discrete, complex, and playing on a fairly wide aromatic range (depending the various techniques of aging). To me what most characterizes these wines is a good balance between fruit and wood. But also the fact that one cannot sense the terroir but can sense the main characteristic aromas of grapes.

Novelty seeking and curiosity as to the choice of raw materials (grapes, fruits, flowers …) also describes quite well the production of this house.

Moving on to the story:

vert-de-vin-bellview-winery-new-jersey-jim-quarella (26)Bellview Winery already produces wines from dandelion flowers or asparagus (Asparagus wine vinegar) and tests the development of new kind of wines. By exemple: a hibiscus flowers wine.

For the record the great-aunt of the owner of Bellview winery proposed long ago wine making from dandelion flower. Changes to the recipe were proposed but Jim Quarella decided to follow the recipe of his great-aunt Ada. Finally it’s a success!

Thanks to the team of Bellview Winery and especially to David Gardner for the hospitality.
