Moze Berthon family vineyards

Family business consisting of three properties/vineyards on the right bank of the Garonne (Gironde), it is currently managed by Patrick and Michael Moze Berthon.
Patrick (the father) and Michael (the son) are heirs of the expertise of seven generations of winemakers. In fact, it is a winemaker family on the side of the Gironde and more specifically in Pomerol (Chateau Gouprie) since 1820.

The vineyards

Chateau Gouprie: The name of this property is due to (without complete certainty) the name of the very spot where now stands the building of the castle that was built as the Chateau Gouprie of Count Couprie (time is the reason change “C” to “G”). The vineyard is planted to 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc.

The Chateau Vieux Chantecaille entered, thanks to an inheritance in the family in the mid 19th century. It owes its name to “Chantecaille” that is to say, the place where it is located. The vineyard consists of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

In 1880 the Chateau Rocher Gardat came to complete family vineyards. The grandfather of Michael gave the name to this property because of the plots of vines that are located on the place called “Gardat” and also because in this land there is a big rock (rock = rocher in French). And yes, sometimes it is not useful to look noon to 14h to find the name of a castle. The vineyard consists of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

How Mickael Moze Berthon has come to the world of wine?

Even though he grew up in the vineyards of the family property this young entrepreneur started his career as a sellmanager for electrical equipment. He had, at first, no particular commitment to the family business apart from the fact of helping his his parents to make wine.

Trade and make a product that we like and which we all have special ties with.”

A few years later, eager to start a business he left his job and founded his trading box with wine as the main supplier of the family vineyards.
Today, in addition to managing his business he handles all the marketing part / commercial wines from his father.
The way the father came to the world of wine is classic. His passion to work in the vineyard has always been obvious. From a young age Patrick Berthon Moze studied so he would be able to help his father in the vineyard. In the end he finally left school to go to work in his passion.

What he look for each year for Moze Berthon‘ wines (Chateau GouprieChateau Rocher-GardatChateau Vieux Chantecaille) ?

A beautiful area and a good balance fruit / oak that is to say that the flavors should not be overly wooded present. »

Side project:

Mickael Moze Berthon wants to acquire acquire plots AOC Bordeaux to produce a rosé and a white wine in a few years

Side anecdote:

The property (cellar and vineyard Montagne St Emilion) is located on a former “crayère” / mushroom. Down in the different wells you can (a way to say it, because it is closed to the public) find in 20metres depth, see cavities excavated over 300 years ago as well as small lakes formed by runoff from the water.
The barrel cellar is also in one of its surface cavities. Also perfect conditions for the creation of a cellar, some of the oldest bottles of property therein, nectars older than 100 years.

Thank you to Michael Moze Berthon for hosting .
