Château Lamothe-Cissac

Château Lamothe-Cissac

…a property with a lot of history in the heart of the Médoc

As evidenced by the many remains, and the confusion of times and places, this Chateau Lamothe-Cissac‘ land has been habited since immemorial times.

There are traces of the first prehistoric men  (Noticed a presence of a tumulus gap of 35,000 years), Gallic (dolmens and bones), Roman (Gallo-Roman villas), and even the remains of a Viking warrior (found in the medieval oblivion).

More recently (as everything is relative), a building dated from the Middle Ages was erected on the site of the present castle. To date only the cellars and dungeons of this ancient fortress still exist.

At the end of the nineteenth century, a massive fire destroyed almost entirely the medieval castle. A long period of reconstruction ensued … which ends almost a century later, in 1903. Each family and each generation brought its  “touch” the additional building.

The arrival of the Fabre family to Chateau Lamothe-Cissac:

In 1964 the property came to the hands of the Fabre family with its acquisition by the father (Gabriel Fabre) of the current owner.

Upon his arrival Gabriel Fabre began a major operation replanting of vines. Indeed, the former owners of Lamothe-Cissac had chosen to cease the production of wine and then the plots were either fallen into disuse or pulled high.

In 1976, Gabriel Fabre bought the vineyards of  the Château Landat located Vertheuil.

In 1982, Vincent Fabre, pulled by two passions: aviation and wine,  decided after much thought to join his father in the property but also to acquire the Domaine de La Tonnelle. A vineyard that once belonged to the famous Chateau Picourneau.

Today the Château Lamothe-Cissac extends over 33 hectares.

After this, a major upgrade tool production (buildings, warehouses etc …) has been produced.

For info, Vincent Fabre is also a big sports fan, he is also the Chairman of the famous “Marathon du Médoc“.

How does he sees his career?

As an exciting job, a complex with a never-ending search for improvement. As Vincent Fabre likes to say “the best vintage will be the next“.

What does he search through each of these wines?

The wines pleasure … nectars to be consumed easily. Wines that after the first glass, would make you say “I would have another one.” Well balanced wines (balanced fruit / power / acidity).

Where does the arms of Domains Fabre come from?

The coat of arms come from a historical stronghold of the Fabre family in the village of Massaguel, a small town located in the city ready to Castres. Historically we find the trace of the baron Fabre whose emblem shows a dove with an olive branch.

A project?

Yes, it would the purchase of a plot slopes and more precisely on a limestone group carrying the idea of a white wine. The other major project, which also should be finished soon, is opening a cottage in the outbuildings of the Château Lamothe-Cissac.

In order to continue with the good habits, we go to the story:

It is difficult to settle for a single anecdote given the rich history of this area / castle …. but here it goes one :

In the foundations of the “villa romana” there were discovered pieces of pottery for the wine (of sesterces, Roman coins have also been discovered). This tells us that the Romans, 2000 years ago, had been already cultivating vines on this soil. That in itself is a sign of the high quality of the terroir.

Thanks to Mr. Vincent Fabre and François Reverdy as well for their hospitality
