Château l’Insoumise

… the rebirth of a vineyard in Saint André de Cubzac.

<img class=”alignright wp-image-2531″ title=”vert-de-vin-chateau-l’insoumise-30″ src=”http://www.vertdevin.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/vert-de-vin-chateau-linsoumise-30-300×225.jpg” alt=”” width=”240″ height=”180″ />Château l’Insoumise is a charming property nestled on the slopes of the Dordogne river, it was built in 1615. Since its origins this house had a viticulture vocation. With the pass of the years and different changes of ownership, the buildings were redesigned and enlarged as the vineyard that is nowadays.
Actually and since 2007 the Château l’Insoumise is managed by Cécile Thirouin and Thierry de Taffin. After a NDO (National Diploma of Oenology) studies in Bordeaux they started work on a property close to Riversalt (loan Perpignan).<img class=”alignleft wp-image-2532″ title=”vert-de-vin-chateau-l’insoumise-7″ src=”http://www.vertdevin.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/vert-de-vin-chateau-linsoumise-7-300×225.jpg” alt=”” width=”240″ height=”180″ />In 2007, the young couple wishing to produce their own wines, returned to their home region: Bordeaux. After a thirty a visit to thirty vineyards, they discovered the Chateau l’Insoumise and had a “coup de coeur”, as well as for the building and for for the vineyard and its terroir. Although initially this couple wanted to have vineyard with a property that was not more extensive the 5 hectares, they bought this winery that was recently renovated by the previous owners.Gradually they began to implement a policy of remodeling of the vineyard, uprooting and replanting plots.
Where does the name come from?
<img class=”alignright wp-image-2533″ title=”vert-de-vin-chateau-l’insoumise-8″ src=”http://www.vertdevin.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/vert-de-vin-chateau-linsoumise-8-300×225.jpg” alt=”” width=”240″ height=”180″ />I guess like me you have to ask where does the unusual name of this property comes from. This vineyard was originally known as the “Domaine de Beychevelle.” However, following a trial with the Chateau Beychevelle the Courts demanded (the time of the former owner) to change the vineyard´s name…. a name that the chateau had used for decades. To express his dissatisfaction with the judgment then owner decided to rename its field to Château l’Insoumise.
How they came up with their passion for wine?
<img class=”alignleft wp-image-2534″ title=”vert-de-vin-chateau-l’insoumise-17″ src=”http://www.vertdevin.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/vert-de-vin-chateau-linsoumise-17-300×225.jpg” alt=”” width=”240″ height=”180″ />Both of them from their families working the land, Cécile comes from a family of farmers of Landes, Thierry and from a family of winemakers of Fronsac. What they like about this job is working in a product that comes from the land, to be versatile, to follow the birth of the product, as Cecile said “We do everything in wine, from A to Z, from the crop to the sales passing through the manufacturing process”.
Three words to describe the job of a winemaker?
“Exciting”, “eclectic” (one day in the cellar one day in the vineyard, another sale), “friendly wine” (wine is not an ordinary product, it is a heritage product, a product of socialization, of meeting).

Looking at the wine list you will see wines labeled “Chai 45”. Why this name? Because the Château l’Insoumise is located exactly on the 45th parallel. Moreover, the property is part of a small association of winemakers …. also installed on the 45th parallel.
Another anecdote, you can find this property in the calendar of winemakers of the Saint André de Cubzac area, in August 2013. The purpose of this schedule to promote the wines of this region, but also to give a non complicated image of the wine, like a young wine.
The “plus”of this property is that it provides a deposit service. 😉
Um … um … go to the tasting: (September 2012)

<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”><img class=”alignright wp-image-2538″ title=”vert-de-vin-chateau-l’insoumise-6″ src=”http://www.vertdevin.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/vert-de-vin-chateau-linsoumise-6-225×300.jpg” alt=”” width=”135″ height=”180″ />The Château Insoumise – Cuvée Prestige 2009 – Bordeaux Supérieur : A wine with toasty notes, liquorice, developing aromas of cassis, blueberries, black berries, plums and violets combined with some soft tannins but fairly well done (merit age yet). Wine minerality (but less than in the Chai 45).

A wine that I personally would accompany with a beef Wellington.

<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”><img class=”alignleft wp-image-2539″ title=”vert-de-vin-chateau-l’insoumise-13″ src=”http://www.vertdevin.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/vert-de-vin-chateau-linsoumise-13-225×300.jpg” alt=”” width=”135″ height=”180″ />The Château Insoumise Chai 45 (red) vintage 2010 – Bordeaux : Cassis, woody, fruity, mineral, red fruit, hint of chocolate, slightly bitter, licorice, spicy mouth (pepper), hawthorn, plum, black berry

Cecilia says that “wine is associated with your recipes every day.” Affirmative! Myself, I would marry it well with a duck breast with honey and soy.

<span style=”text-decoration: underline;”><img class=”alignright wp-image-2540″ title=”vert-de-vin-chateau-l’insoumise-1″ src=”http://www.vertdevin.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/vert-de-vin-chateau-linsoumise-1-225×300.jpg” alt=”” width=”135″ height=”180″ />The Château Insoumise Chai 45 (white) vintage 2011 – Bordeaux : A wine round, fat, revealing notes of citrus (lemon, orange zest) exotic fruit (papaya), but also floral aromas associated with a note roast.

Nectar that I will associate with Asparagus and Smoked Salmon bundles.
Thanks to Cécile Thirouin and Thierry de Taffin for their hospitality.
