Domaine Boinaud : Cognac de Luze
All the know-how of one of the oldest family producers
Cognac De Luze is the largest family home, in terms of area, producing Cognac from Grande and Petite Champagne. This house belongs to Boinaud a family that has been present in the region for 24 generations. Indeed the first Boinaud (formerly ” boisnaud ” which means the old man of the woods in charantais) was a winemaker in the region in 1640. However it was not until 2006 that the family Boinaud acquired this luze brand.
The De Luze brand has its origins in 1817 with the creation by Baron Alfred De Luze of a trading house of wine and Cognac in New York grew rapidly. With this success Baron Alfred De Luze returned to France in Bordeaux to found a second antenna to the wine trading company in New York. It was in 1862 that the family De Luze, aiming to strengthen its trading in Cognac acquired the Domaine du Chaigne in Grande Champagne and created and therefore the brand of Cognac De Luze. The family made of the quality of its Cognac his watchword. This policy also earned him a royal honor bestowed by King Christian X of Denmark. This large house of Cognac remains in the same family until 1980 when it was sold to the French spirits group Remy Cointreau.
The brand will remain in their hands until 2006. Year in which the family that already owned Grande Champagne bought the brand to resume its history.
Since 2006 the family has worked to restore the prestige of the brand by relocating the production of Cognac in Grande Champagne but also yield the greatest care and attention to its Cognacs terroir.
Particularly important today because of the Eaux-de-vie stock the grandfather of the Boinaud family offers a variety of Cognac which certain wines are made with old eaux- de-vie almost a century. If you go to the property you will also see in a room adjacent to the tasting room stock centenary.
Concerned about the quality and mastery of the entire chain production of the production, the family not only to distills but works in the operation of the vine until bottling through distillation, livestock but also by making his own barrels.
Meeting with Rémi Boinaud
Can you tell me about your career, your job ?
“I come from a tray Viti Oeno , I completed a Bac Pro eno as well as law school degree. I have always worked here at the property, it’s in my blood. I came to work at the homestead by passion. What I love about what I do is the variety and seasonality of the trade.” (Remi Boinaud)
“For me the Cognac is not just a digestive but potable alcohol which therefore means that there are multiple possible moments to taste a Cognac: appetizer, friends or throughout the meal condition adapt the temperature and the type of consumer … “(Remi Boinaud)
If you had to choose three words to define the Cognac that you choose ?
“I would know-how, patience and upscale ” (Remi Boinaud)
What is sought each year in the development of Cognac de Luze ?
“The common thread for our VS is having a Cognac with flexibility and more caramel dress. A very fruity, round and long finish Cognac. The roundness is really a given that characterizes our VSOP. For manufacturing we support on our large stock of Eaux- de-Vie. We distil sur lie and we do not filter. “(Remi Boinaud)
Side project :
In the short-term Boinaud family wishes to relaunch the brand Cognac Dupont, a house that was bought by the grandfather but not operated since then. It is a premium brand of Cognac very high, 100% Grande Champagne making it a very qualitative Eaux-de-vie.
Let’s go to the weekly story:
Grandfather Remy had not onlt passion for the Cognac but also for poetry. If you visit the property, you can also read one of his poems on the wall of the cellar.
” Cognac is not a poison
Drink ye therefore rightly
It is an elixir instead
And you will become centenary “
A poem (in french) by 8 feet (syllables) in each verse, with flat making it a simple but balanced stanza rhyme.
Thanks to Rémi Boinaud for his hospitality.
