Corte Scaletta
A young and promising vineyard!
Corte Scaletta is a young and small family property located in Marcellise, a few kilometers from Verona. The property, which covers 10 hectares, facing south was acquired in 1998 by the Cavedini family. For more than 10 years the estate produced no wine but simply grapes that were sold to other local vineyards. It was not until 2011 that the Cavedini family decided to vinify some of the grapes on the estate. The ultimate ambition is to vinify 100% of the fruits from their vineyard.
Each year Corte Scaletta produces four wines: Valpolicella, Valpolicella DOC Superiore, Amarone della Valpolicella, Cabernet Sauvignon IGT. In spite of the youth of the production, the wines show a nice harmony and quality.
Currently the property is managed by Giulia and Riccardo Cavedini. Let’s go together to meet Giulia
Where does the name of the winery come from ?
« Our vineyards are inside a walled estate… It’s a sort of “clos”. The name Corte Scaletta come from the little staircase (Scaletta in italian) that go from the estate to the village center. »
What is your wine signature ?
« I think that one of the main characteristic of the wines is the balance between red fruits notes and spices notes. They mainly come from the typicity our terroir. »
For my part I would add that the work on matter, harmony, precision and gourmandise are also characteristics common to all their wines. There is a certain modern approach in these wines.
Why did you choose to make wine ?
« I decided to start the winery because before we sold all our grapes to other wineries and it was time to “close the loop” and put all our passion in a bottle… Because I want to start a new story with a brand “Corte Scaletta” that represents our land and our tradition.”
What make your terroir so specific ?
« The grapes come from our own vineyards with 2 different kind of soils: some vineyards tending to clay (Characteristics in wine: good extracts, good acidity, ages well) and some vineyards Calcareous (Characteristics in wine: salts, perfume, aromas). I think that is a good combination! The main characteristic that our terroir gives to our wines is the spiced notes, balsamic notes, the salt and also a good longevity.
Also, our vines are protected by the mountains and hills which mitigate the climate, wind through Marcellise and around the Musella estate. »
Can you describe your passion for wines in 3 or 4 words?
“I would say: Quality, tradition, care of the environment.”
Do you have a plans for your winery ?
« We would like to increase the production up to 50.000 bottles and continue to produce wines that are pure expression of our territory and which tell the story of Valpolicella. »
