Domaine des Mailloches
Know-how from 8 generations of winemaking …
The Domaine des Mailloches is a winery located in the village of Restigné in the heart of the Bourgueil appellation. The vineyard belongs to the Demont family. It was created by the same family in the early 19th century which makes Samuel Demont, the current owner, in the eighth generation of wine producers of this region.
The property consists of a charming chartreuse of white stone, surmounted by a small tower. Besides, there are farm buildings made of stone and wood structures which date from the late 19th century . These buildings are the house the winery and the tasting room.
Since 2002 and after making a BTA in Amboise and after working in many properties in France and in South Africa, Samuel Demont and his wife managed the Domaine des Mailloches . Today this young couple is working on combining the ruling typicities of Bourgueil wines, that said, the signature family continuity on wines and other modern techniques such as thermoregulation, shorter vinification or the use of micro-oxygenation.
What characterizes the wines of this property?
“The wines of Domaine des Mailloches are righteous wines, genuine and without aromatic deviance. They seek above all to express the flavors of the grape without the wooded flavor that takes over. Light wines, keen and easy access. Regarding the Cuvée Sophie what is sought is a fleshy, elegant and feminine wine ”
FYI the name “Sophie” was chosen because it is the name of the sister of Samuel. Regarding the vintage “400.9” name matches the capacity of the barrels used for aging (18 months). For this wine malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels and stirring (“bâtonnage”) is performed. The first vintage of this wine was 2009.
What do you think about your work?
“Already it is better to be passionate or one should do something else. It is a hard business in which there is a lot of stress, both administrative and regarding climate but also a trade source of great pleasure.” Especially when the winemaker, after a year of work, taste the fruit of his labor. The wine evolves over time it offers at every stage of its aging new pleasures.
How would you describe the wines of Bourgueil?
It is a set! The Bourgueil vineyards notemment vigils give very structured wine with a beautiful body. Nectars flexible, with a good balance (important). Wine where the oak is very present.
The Bourgueil are commonly divided into two categories: those wines on gravel and on limestone (truffeau). The first will be more on fruits, they are lightweight and fast consumables. The latter are more tannic, more robust, more full-bodied and deserve cellared.
For the history of the Domaine des Mailloches provided wine for an official meal to F. Mitterrand. You’ll also find some vintages of this area in the basement of Matignon. Still at historic wines of this property was present at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889.
Thanks to Samuel Demont for his hospitality.
