Feudo Montoni

The custodians of the land and its past

Feudo Montoni is a historic Sicilian winery located in the principality of Villanova. The domaine was created in 1469 by a noble family, the Abatellis. At the end of the 18th century Rosario, grandfather of Fabio Sireci (the current owner) bought this land. Sincethen this family has passed on from generation to generation.

VertdeVin: could you speak about your love foryour terroir, your soil and your place?

Fabio Sireci: We have a very particular terroir. We are in the centre of Sicily, between the two mountain chains – Monte Madonìa (2000m) and Monte Cammarata (1500m). The vineyards are situated at around 800 m above sea level. These conditions give to us the possibility to have a very diverse terroir. We have sandy soils, clay soils and rocky soils, full of minerals and fossils that come from 60 million years ago. The exposition of the vineyard is also particular. All the
vineyards are oriented in the way to catch the better side for preserving acidity and freshness.

What represents this land for you?

F.S.: It is my second mother, my life, my history, three generations of hard work of my family. Now it is not only a job, a business, I am a custodian of something that came from the past of my family, from the past of my land like biotype of our old vineyards. For example, the vines of the cru Vrucara are pre-phylloxera and are at least 150 years old.

Thanks to Fabio Sireci for sharing his time – J.C.C.
