Château Julia
This week I invite you to discover one of the smallest vineyard of the with Pauillac appellation, Château Julia.
The Chateau Julia, in addition to being the smallest property (55 acres of AOC Pauillac, and 3.30 ha are AOC Médoc) of vineyards, it is also one of the youngest. Indeed, it was created in 2008 by Sophie Martin. Wishing to develop its own label, and not lacking courage, she decided to stop work cooperatively to create her own label.
The owner wasn’t named Julia, but where does that name comes from? Answer: the contraction of the names of Sophie Martin´s children.
How does she develop her work?
Like an inherited passion from her father but not innate. It was only on the dau of the death of his father that this dynamic winemaker fell in love with her land …. After that, it was impossible to spend a day without going through the vineyards … that would be missing too much.
“Indulging in creating my wine, and give pleasure to drink it always” here is the leitmotif of Sophie.
Some features of Chateau Julia:
- Variety: 90% cabernet and 10% merlot
- 1 / 3 new barrels
- Soil: it’s intensely gravelly soil
- Production: 3500/4000 bottles AOC Pauillac
- Manual harvest
- Wine maturing process: 12 months in barrels
A project for the future? develop its own label in Haut-Médoc. After the grapes currently 3.30 hectares are sold to the buyers.
For once, the anecdote not involves only the vineyard, but also myself.
To my surprise I learned that the labeling is done by hand with a wooden machine (see photo). The owner suggested that I try to make one and, …I accepted with joy!
Thanks to Sophie Martin for hosting
