Chateau du Hâ

This is a young property created in 1997 by Cedric Moreau, and it initially covered 0.5 hectares, nowadays, it has 4.5 hectares.

vert-de-vin-chateau-du-hâ-6Upon arrival of the owners, the buildings were in ruins and the vine in a state of wasteland / of total abandonment, therefore he had to replant immediately.

Which is the owner´s background?

Initially Cedric decided to get into the agricultural field, because of his passion about the horses, and he wanted to make a career of it. This passion for the equestrian world is acquired during a horseback ride on the beach in his childhood.
This walk was a revelation for him!

Studied in the 2nd Agricultural High School of Blanquefort, where he specialized, somehow by default, in a branch specialty of the school: training wine. He discovered, little by little, the wine world and this will make his passion grow up. Subsequently he was hired as chief operating officer at Chateau Cach (Haut Medoc).

During a GERBAUDE (end of harvest meal) with wine growers of the region he learned that a property near his workplace was for sale. A few days passed before he and his wife go to visit the area…. it was love at first sight when they got there.
Today Cedric Moreau is able to combine his two interests: the world of wine and the horse´s.
So this property is not only a winery but also a place where there are breed horses for competition.

Some features:

  • Soil: clay and limestone and serious for the parcel of vines watches
  • Produced four wines: Chateau du Hâ (50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon) AOC Haut-Médoc, the Rose du Hâ (80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc) AOC Vin de Table, Equus du Hâ(old vines: 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot) AOC Haut-Médoc, Hâ typique (old vines: Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) AOC Haut-Médoc.
  • Ageing: Chateau du Hâ (30% chips and 70% of AC such as “staves” that is to say small thin plates heated as the staves of barrels), the Rose du Hâ (Bled rosé) Equus du Hâ (22 months in barrel. A stirring of the lees is done with oxygen. No withdrawal), Hâ Typique (36 months aging on lees without racking and total)
  • Practice agriculture that could be described as rational
  • Production: 25,200 bottles / year

A wine vocabulary:

You should probably be asking yourself what is the the racking (soutirage)?!

Racking is the separation of the clear wine from its lees by transferring the wine from one container to another, thereby aerate and separate the clear wine from its lees (the solid parts: skin, seeds and pulp).

The story of the week for the property name:

Foremost “Hâ” is the name of the road to this property but it is also the name of a walkway surrounding a middle-age castle. Formerly this road went around the village of Fournas. A second explanation is, explanation more “glamorous” …. “Hâ” in Chinese means “little lazy river” which perfectly characterizes this place.
