Clos des Religieuses

Clos des Religieuses

Clos des Religieuses

Main property of the LEYNIER family vineyards, the Clos des Religieuses is located on the heights of Gironde.

The building of the Clos des Religieuses was built in the early 17th century as an annex of the Ursulines (religious teachers) from Saint-Emilion. The building was sold in 1789 following its seizure by the state. As a little history, the Ursulines are the ones who created the famous macaroons from Saint-Emilion.

In 1960 the property came to the hands of the family Leynier. Nowadays, it is managed by Thierry and Sabine Leynier. Two siblings deeply attached to their vines and totally devoted to their professions.

Where does their passion come from?

The love for the family land came naturally, obviously, from their parents.

Which are their values?

Respect for the ancestral heritage of the family know-how, and its perpetuation is their motto. Be sure the next generation is here! And even when she is still young she already seems passionate about the work in the vineyard.

Some features:

  • Produced wines: Clos des Religious (Puisseguin Saint-Emilion), Chateau Notre Dame (Montagne Saint-Emilion), The Chateau Baradis (Côtes de Castillon)
  • Chateau Notre Dame 4 hectares, and the Chateau Baradis 6 hectares
  • Soil: clay and limestone
  • Production: 100,000 bottles
  • Assembly: three wines are blended in the same way, namely 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. What makes the difference between each wine is that the choice of the plots and their land … that gives a quite different final wine result in each case.
  • Blending: 11 months in barrels of which 50% of new barrels.
  • Practice grassing and tillage every second row. Leynier vineyards offer a service of “cottage”

This week we will focus on the short story of the name of the AOC:

PUISSEGUIN Saint-Emilion. Let’s start with the simplest. “Saint-Emilion” AOC is a satellite of St. Emilion, the name of the appellation mother is taken. The word “Puisseguin” is a combination of two words, the word “Puy” which means “Mountain” in Gascon, and the word “Seguin”, which is the name of a lieutenant of Charlemagne, who settled in the region around the year 800.

Have a good week!

Thanks to Thierry and Sabine Leynier for their hospitality.
